Duets - S01E01 - The Superstars' Greatest Hits (High MP4) (WEBM) (Aired: 2012-05-24) "Duets" - "The Superstars Greatest Hits" - May 24, 2012We open on a stage full of dancers, which is trange for a singing show. Then stars/judges/coaches Kelly Clarkson, Robin Thicke, Jennifer Nettles, and John Legend come out and sing "Let Me Entertain You" by Robbie Williams. They sing as the dancers flip around them. And then a drum corps comes out. Because, why not?Quddus our host says that's just a taste of what's to come over the next 9 weeks. They each take seat in their own little pod in a white chair with a little desk.Quddus tells us the contestants will be competing for a record deal with Hollywood Records and throws to a video package of the auditions and how the show came together. The four singers fanned out across America to find two duet partners. There were no cattle calls or judging panels. They talk about how difficult it was to find just the right people.First up is Jennifer's search. She starts in Las Vegas where she's rehearsing for the tour. She has pared down audition tapes and has invited them to sing for her. The montage of people they're showing are varying quality. She listens to them and then invites some for trial duets. First up is Brandon a dad who wants to use "Duets" as his last shot at music. He sings "If You Don't Know Me By Now" with JNet and it sounds good. She has other auditions so she's putting a pin in him until those are done. She heads to New York and meets a bunch more. She's impressed by a guy named J Rome.Performance: Jennifer and J Rome sing the Sugarland song "Tonight" onstage in our first performance. He sounds good and more importantly they sound good together until the end when it sounds like someone goes off and it's hard to tell which one of them it is.Quddus explains the ranking: the three stars who didn't perform give a ranking between 1 and 50 in two categories, performance and presentation, for a total score that can go up to 100. After each "amateur" performs they're standing will be revealed.Judging: Kelly says they sounded great together. Robin says he's very handsome and has an amazing voice. John says he looks and sounds like a star. At the moment he's number one on the leaderboard because he was the first to perform.Next up is John's search. He had people audition in the "Duets" studio. His montage of people is pretty good. He liked a guy named Johnny Gray but was worried he riffed too much. John calls him back and has him sing his song "Ordinary People" straightforwardly and he does it well.Performance: John and Johnny sing "Ordinary People." Johnny sounds a bit like John himself, but he's acquitting himself nicely. They don't sing together until the very end. It's fine, but not mind-blowing harmony-wise.Judging: Robin thinks Johnny is amazing and impressive. Kelly loves that he's so happy. Jennifer loves his beautiful low end and it was warm like honey. Johnny is now in second place.Next up is Robin's search. He did his auditions in a famous studio in L.A. He calls back Dante, a Marine. He has some timing issues. He also calls back Olivia Chisholm. He clearly likes her. He has them both step out so he can decide. He picks Olivia.Performance: Robin and Olivia sing his song "Lost Without You." They both have a chalkiness to their voices that work well together both timing and harmony-wise. The song, however, is a huge yawn. It's supposed to be sexy but it's just wispy.Judging: John thought she sounded very sexy and a bit like Aaliyah but he says she could get into it even more. Jennifer loves how authentic her voice is in this genre. Kelly agrees she sounds sexy and looks beautiful. She's in third place on the leaderboard.Up next is Kelly's search. She conducted hers during her recent concert tour. She calls back Juliana and Jason Farol from the first group of auditions. She throws them a curve and invites them to sing onstage with her in front of 6,000 fans at her show. She and Juliana sing "Georgia on My Mind." She holds her own pretty well under the circumstances but Kelly thinks it didn't quite blend as well as she'd hoped because Juliana sings more through her nose and Kelly sings more from her gut. Jason sing a song called "I Always Will" (?). He got a little overwhelmed at then end but it was very sweet. She picks Jason.Performance: Kelly and Jason sing her song "Breaking Your Own Heart." He's got a lovely voice and they blend nicely together. She's doing the heavy lifting harmony-wise but he's holding his own.Judging: Jennifer says when his voice opens up it lights up the room. Robin says he's adorable, his voice, his face, and his energy. John loves how much Jason loves being here. Jason is now in fourth place.Next up John's second duet partner. He calls back several people including a quirky girl named Elizabeth, a student at Harvard. A bigger girl named Britney. A more polished singer named Bridget Carrington. He picks her, she's the clear choice.Performance: John and Bridget sing "Tonight (Best You Ever Had)." It's a rhythmic ballad, sexy but with forward momentum. She may be the most assured contestant thus far and they sound lovely together, as if she's been his back-up singer for years.Judging: Robin says when they're singing together they have great chemistry. Jennifer says it was classy and she owned it. Kelly thought it was hot and sexy and she wants to do a duet with him now. She's number four on the leaderboard.nNext up is Jennifer's second choice. She finds him at the annual National 4-H Gala. She invites a Georgia group called Clovers and Company to sing with her and in it is John Glossen who is from her hometown. He sings "How Great Thou Art" and he brings her to tears. Performance: Jennifer and John sing "Stay." He's got a good, strong, powerful high tenor that meshes very well with her. It is very impressive: focused, emotional, controlled.Judging: Kelly is crying and says he's like an angel. John thinks he sounds crystal clear and blended great. Robin is impressed that he held his own with Jennifer. He's in third place on the leader board.nNext up is Robin's second choice. He wants a gospel singer and tries out two people and picks Alexis Foster.Performance: Robin and Alexis sing "Magic," which is an uptempo dance track and doesn't have a lot of melody to hold on to. She's a little awkward physically but she's a natural singer and sounds good with Robin. Judging: Kelly loved that she seemed so happy and thinks her voice is beautiful. John likes her nice, clear as a bell tone. Jennifer loved it. Alexis is number three on the leaderboard. Next up is Kelly's second choice. She auditions a few more people and has a few sing with her a the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. A couple of them-- Jordan and Ashley-- sound great. She picks Jordan Meredith.nPerformance: Kelly and Jordan sing "Stronger" and they sound terrific together. Kelly clearly made the right choice because when they sing together it isn't always clear who is singing lead. She sounds better with Kelly than without but she still sounds good.Judging: John says Kelly did a great job and says sometimes he couldn't tell them apart. Jennifer agrees there were times she couldn't tell them apart and that is a testament to her voice. Robin thinks she makes the whole stage bubble with good times. Jordan is number 7 on the leaderboard. The bottom two are Kelly's singers. She thinks that's suspect. Stars: Quddus, Kelly Clarkson, Robin Thicke Director(s): Gary Halvorson, Rei Gunn Writer(s): |
Duets - S01E02 - Classic Duets (High MP4) (WEBM) (Aired: 2012-05-31) "Duets" - "Classic Duets" - May 31, 2012Host Quddus explains the rules again and tells us that in week 6 we go live.Theme: Classic DuetsPerformance: We open with Kelly Clarkson and RobinThicke singing the Mick Jagger/Michael Jackson duet "State of Shock"Contestant/Coach: Bridget Carrington/John Legend We see them in rehearsal and John says last week's problem was a little too low for her.Song: "I Knew You Were Waiting," George Michael and Aretha FranklinPerformance: She starts off strong and crisp. It is a good key for both of them, if anything it seems a little speedy for him. They make a cute pair and the song is sassy. It's fun. Judging: Jennifer loved it and saw the work that she put in an she raised the bar on her own performance. Kelly thought she was fantastic, tasteful, and she nailed it. Robin says she looks like a bag of Skittles and he loves Skittles. He thinks she felt safe singing to John but more timid looking at the crowd until the end and she came out of her shell and he thought it was great.Contestant/Coach: Jordan Meredith/Kelly Clarkson Kelly talks to both of her contestants about being in the bottom two. She thinks it's because the others have more experience. She says they can't control the results but can control their performances. She thinks "Stronger" last week wasn't the best choice and thinks this song will be a better choice. Kelly yells at her, nicely, to be confident. She says if Jordan's in the bottom two she's walking out.Song: "Misery," Pink and Steven TylerPerformance: It's a slow, torchy, blues number. Jordan starts strong and improves as Kelly joins and they start harmonizing. They sound great. The song is kind of a yawn though.Judging: Jennifer thinks it was a great song choice and her grit and soul. Robin thinks Kelly picked the perfect song and that misery loved company but that she didn't finish as strong as she started. John loved her tone up top but his concern was on the side of precision and pitch. He also advises her not to use Kelly as a crutch.nContestant/Coach:John Glosson/Jennifer Nettles Jennifer thought he was the top singer last week-- he came in at number 3-- but thinks that the strategy of the other judges came into play. Jennifer is worried that John Legend, a Marvin Gaye super-freak, will be critical, and so they're staying close to the original version.Song: "Ain't No Mountain High," Marvin Gaye and Tammi TerrellPerformance: They're very playful with each other and they sound pretty good. His movement seems to be winding him a bit at first but it improves as he continues. He's very confident and assured.Judging: Kelly loved that it was uptempo and that he's having fun. She thinks the movements were a little hokey but the vocals were great. Robin agrees he has an amazing voice but thinks it was the wrong song and that the moves were hokey but he sounded good. John thinks he has a phenomenal voice but he thinks he took the energy to sort of a Broadway place with the moves. nContestant/Coach: Olivia Chisholm/Robin Thicke She has never heard the song before. He wants to add some theatrical tension to the song because they have romantic chemistry. He tells her not to worry about moves until she knows the lyrics and then to begin sashaying and throwing off some attitude. In rehearsal she's having trouble with the lyrics and Robin is annoyed.Song: "Where is the Love?" Donny Hathaway and Roberta FlackPerformance: She looks beautiful but it seems like she's having pitch problems right out of the gate. She sounds good in patches but also has patches where she is nervous and pitchy. She seems to gain confidence by the end as she's succeeding, but then a bad note here and there. RobinJudging: John loves her presence and thinks she looks great and the chemistry was good. Jennifer thought it was great but felt there were pitchy moments because of her confidence issues and thinks last week's choice was better for her voice. Kelly mocks the lyrics of the song but thinks she has a cool texture to her voice.nJohn's second partner Johnny Grey is no longer in the competition "due to unforeseen circumstances" according to Quddus. So he held a rapid fire audition to find someone new. We see a video package of this. He narrows it down to two and has them have a sing off and warns them that if they get it they will be on national TV in 48 hours. Meleana learns "Endless Love" and Mario learns "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin." They sound great together. I would pick him.nContestant/Coach Meleana Brown/John Legend:Song: "Endless Love," Diana Ross and Lionel RichiePerformance: She looks beautiful, if a little pagaent contestant-y but she's rushing the tempo. For someone who didn't know she was going to be on national television yesterday, she's doing great. She doesn't have a lot of high notes but she has power.Judging: Robin makes a weird sandwich metaphor which adds up to him loving her. Kelly is confused by what Robin said and welcomes her to the show and thanks she did a great job but needs her to relax a little so she can show off more soul. Jennifer thinks she's superclassy and she made it a little bit her own even though she was nervous. She shoots to the top of the leaderboard. John is impressed.nContestant/Coach: Jason Farol/Kelly Clarkson In this week's rehearsal Kelly tells him he has to be confident to get out of last place. She wants him to let go. Song: "Whenever You Call," Mariah Carey and Brian McKnightPerformance: He starts off sweet and smiley. She joins him confident and smoky. They look at each other and him seems more confident. They sound great together. He's got a beautiful smile also. He comes out of himself on the bridge and it's a real blossoming moment. Judging: John liked it but his issue is that he's looking too much to Kelly for approval and he needs to open up more. Robin says it was a big difference from last week and once he stepped away and realized he could do it on his own he exploded. Jennifer sees the growth as well but wants him to loosen up in his torso. Kelly tells him to bring the sexy next time.nContestant/Coach: J. Rome/Jennifer Nettles He's worried that it's going to be corny. She thinks they can pull it off.Song: "You're the One That I Want," John Travolta and Olivia Newton-JohnPerformance: He sounds great and he's got moves. Ditto for Jennifer. They are supercute together and theyv'e worked out some choreography that's adorable.Super fun.Judging: Kelly was worried about the choice but she thought it was great and he had swagger and he made it cool. John thinks he's a natural onstage and he didn't think it was the best choice vocally, which Kelly also said, but thought he was great. Robin gives him a 10 for presence and pelvic thrusting and he thinks he has a great chance to win the whole thing. He's now tied for first place with Meleana. nContestant/Coach: Alexis Foster/Robin Thicke He wants to work on her connection with the audience and she agrees it's a problem. He wants her to seem like more than a back-up singer.Song: "You're All I Need to Get By," Marvin Gaye and Tammi TerrellPerformance: She looks lovely in white and with her hair down. Adn when she takes to the microphone she does a great job and has opened up more in terms of personality for sure. He even looks surprised and impressed watching her perform.Judging: Jennifer thought she added to the smooth element of the song and the playfulness between them. John wants her to hold the microphone to her mouth more closely but thought she was great. Kelly found it very disconnected until the very end. Rankings:nTied for First-Meleana and J. Duets - S01E03 - Songs That Inspire (High MP4) (WEBM) (Aired: 2012-06-07) "Duets" - Songs That Inspire - June 7, 2012Theme: Songs That InspirePerformance: Jennifer Nettles and John Legend team up for "I Got the Music In Me."Contestant/Coach: Alexis Foster/Robin Thicke We see them in rehearsal and Robin tells him they are the underdogs because he is the least known person in the competition and they were near the bottom of the leaderboard. First up is Alexis who Robin wants to be confident and in control.Song: "Killing My Softly," Roberta FlackPerformance: They sound wonderful together with Alexis taking the high harmony part. She is very natural.Judging: John thought she sounded clear as a bell and it was well-done. Kelly thought she sounded great felt a little disconnect between Alexis and the audience since she looked so much at Robin and she wants her to engage the audience more. Jennifer agrees but thought there was some growth from last week.Contestant/Coach: John Glosson/Jennifer Nettles In rehearsal he talks about how important this song is to him and tells a story about today is the day his mother found out she was pregnant with him and the next day his parents lost his older brother to leukemia.Song: "How Great Thou Art," Traditional HymnPerformance: It is grandiose yet heartelt and they sound strong together and both have a lot of conviction.Judging: Kelly thinks he's too damn good and they sound like they've been singing together forever. Robin was touched by it and it made him think of family. John thinks they sounded beautiful and the arrangement was gorgeous.Contestant/Coach: Jordan Meredith/Kelly Clarkson Jordan thinks she sounds good but thinks she looks funny. Kelly wants to help her feel better since they're very similar in terms of their lives. She says she needs the sense of nothing to lose to translate to her performance and confidence.Song: "Mama's Broken Heart," Miranda LambertPerformance: She is much sassier and exuding more of a sense of fun. Kelly's clearly having a good time too and they sound great together. She gets points for going and flirting with Robin. Plus, it's a terrific, funny, bouncy song.Judging: John says wow and that he loves it. He thinks he carried herself like a star and it was a dramatic improvement. Robin thinks she looks tasty as pie and she was a whole new person. Jennifer loved it and had the look of a rock star and the sound of a country star and she thought she really grew.Contestant/Coach Meleana Brown/John Legend: They celebrate that she was number one last week and she can scarcely believe it.Song: "If I Ain't Got You," Alicia KeysPerformance: She looks chic in white and gold and she sounds strong. But together it's hand-in-glove vocally. Legend gives a lot and she's responding well.Judging: Kelly says her favorite part of the voice is her head voice because her power belt is a little nasally and she thinks they were great together. Jennifer was worried about the beginning but saw her get confident and get really into it. Robin thinks she's wonderful and it was a great song choice.Contestant/Coach: Olivia Chisholm/Robin Thicke Thicke says she needs to pretend like Beyonce retired and take her shoes. She needs to get out of her head and have more confidence and to keep her moving and be free and unafraid.Song: "Crazy in Love," BeyoncePerformance: They're very cute together and she's moving well. It's a very light performance vocally but she's hitting it.Judging: Jennifer could tell she was having fun, and she thought there was great growth from last week. Kelly loved it and liked that she sounded bigger and bolder. John raves about her legs and she loved the way she opened up, he wasn't as impressed vocally as the others.Contestant/Coach: J. Rome/Jennifer Nettles He was inspired to sing this song by his grandfather who was his biggest fan. We see video of J.Rome and his grandfather singing "Amazing Grace" in his granddad's nursing home.Song: "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You," Laura Branigan/Michael BoltonPerformance: It's a big dramatic ballad, they both sound good. She's giving a lot with her eyes and he seems to be a little more closed off but that might be emotional protection. He hits all the big notes with ease.Judging: John says he's running out of nice things to say about J. Rome and he calls him phenomenal. Robin just applauds. Kelly is a wreck and crying and says he's so good and she hates him, but she's just kidding.Contestant/Coach: Jason Farol/Kelly Clarkson Kelly is trying to figure out what's holding Jason back. He's worried about pleasing people and is nervous about what his parents want for him, which is school. She brings his dad in as a surprise. His dad sings too and gives him support since his own dad didn't support him.Song: "Hallelujah," Leonard CohenPerformance: Jason starts off soft but solid. Kelly enters and they sound nice but very sedate. He's clearly very into the song but Kelly is overpowering him but he gets in a couple of good licks.Judging: Robin thought it was lovely and says his dad wanted him to be a dentist so he empathizes with his family pressures but says he was born to do it. John thought it was a great song to show off his tone. John thought it was pitchy and that he swallows his consonants a bit. Jennifer thought it was a little bit shaky at first but got better and saw growth in his confidence.Contestant/Coach: Bridget Carrington/John Legend She's climbed steadily up the chartsSong: "Heard It Through the Grapevine," Marvin Gaye/Gladys KnightPerformance: John starts off the Marvin version and sounds golden. It's a weird way to go. Then Bridget sashays out and does the Gladys version. They seem to be having fun and sound good but, maybe the song is just too overplayed, because even though it's uptempo it doesn't feel exciting. She's grooving though.Judging: Robin thought she did a great job. Jennifer loved that she had so much attitude and loved the gravel in her voice. Her only note was the beginning was muddy. Kelly agrees with that but then when she got going she shone really bright.Rankings:n1st J. Rome2nd John Glosson3rd Jordan Meredith4th Bridget Carrington5th Meleana Brown6th Olivia Chisholm7th Jason Farol8th Alexis FosterSing Off Jason vs. AlexisIn the first a cappella solo showdown Jason chooses "Me and Mrs. Jones" and hits some clunkers right at the beginning. It has nice moments but isn't perfect. Alexis is stronger and more confident on "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman" although she hits a couple of bum notes as well.Kelly says she thought Alexis was good but Jason's her boy. Robin thinks they're both lovely and he John both give them advice to keep at it. Jennifer says those the most tenacious peeps do the best and she wonders where these performances were before. Kelly chimes back in to agree with that advice.Going Home: Alexis Foster Stars: Quddus, Kelly Clarkson, Robin Thicke Director(s): Gary Halvorson Writer(s): |
Duets - S01E04 - Party Songs (High MP4) (WEBM) (Aired: 2012-06-13) "Duets" - Party Songs - June 14, 2012Theme: Party SongsnContestant/Coach: Jason Farol/Kelly Clarkson They watch back last week's performance and see there were flat bits. Kelly coaches him on stage presence and moving to the music. Song: "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" the Rolling StonesPerformance: She has a lot more energy than he does. He sounds okay but he seems nervous and looks to her a lot. It's also not a great duet song. She blows him out of the water with her verse. The band is also pretty overpowering. nJudging: Jennifer thought it was his best performance so far and she notes he's young and has a lot of room to grow. John thougt it was his most effective vocal so far. He was of two minds about the movement with some of it organic and some of it forced. Robin agrees it was his best so far and he thinks his nerves are starting to go away.nContestant/Coach: Bridget Carrington/John Legend John discusses his and Bridget's similar backgrounds in business and he tries to build her confidence. He jokes that he has to figure out how to cry like Jennifer. Song: "Last Dance," Donna SummerPerformance: The beginning eels a little low for Bridget. They play off each other well in the sultry beginning and when the song picks up the tempo they get down very naturally. It's very cute.Judging: Kelly loved the end and thought it was cute and sexy but she wants to see more of her looking out at the audience. Jennifer is surprised that these are turning out to be so great since they were worried about party songs. Robin respects her passion when she performs, he wants to see her have more fun.Contestant/Coach: J. Rome/Jennifer Nettles She wants to hold on to their number ones status. He wants to make everyone dance this week since he made them all cry last week. Song: "PYT," Michael JacksonPerformance: This is a great song for both of their voices. Plus, it's a lot of fun and suits JNet's personality. He may ebe overdoing it with the MJ-style hat and gloves but he can move. It both sounds and looks good and professional, the best performance so far.Judging: Kelly didn't like that it looked like an MJ impersonation. Robin thinks he belongs on the stage and will just be a stepping stone. John says it gets old telling him how great he is every week and just to watch getting too nasal.nContestant/Coach: Olivia Chisholm/Robin Thicke Robin brought his son to the rehearsal and he's adorable. She didn't like watching her teammate Alexis go home last week. He wants her to connect with the lyrics.Song: "Let's Stay Together," Al GreenPerformance: She has a great husky tone and meshes well with his falsetto. It's all very sexy as the stage is flooded with dry ice and they sip faux martinis and Robin goes with the tux and the undone bow tie look. Judging: John likes when she sounds smooth but thinks she needs to show a little more power. Kelly thinks she has amazing breath control and to be careful of pitch issues. Jennifer thought it was great.nContestant/Coach: Jordan Meredith/Kelly Clarkson Kelly forces her to watch herself be amazing last week so she can replicate last week's greatness and attitude. Song: "I Love Rock and Roll," Joan JettPerformance: With cheesy backing dancers faking playing guitar Jordan struts out and starts it off low and funky. Kelly comes out and they amp it up. Jordan even lets out a little Joan-ish howl. Judging: Jennifer felt her nerves in places but thought it was mostly great. Robin thought her sultry, bluesiness last week was more fun and he didn't really feel her as a rocker. John thinks she should just sing barefoot as they all agree that her teetering around on stilettos was probably hampering her. Contestant/Coach Meleana Brown/John Legend: John is excited that they're doing a song by one of the other judges. He thinks it's a risk. She's nervous.Song: "Since U Been Gone," Kelly ClarksonPerformance: They sound great and it's a cute idea for both of them. The chorus harmony is a little rough and the band is too loud but they're having fun. Judging: Kelly loved it and she knows it's a hard song to sing and it was a little pitchy but she loved the surprise. Jennifer loved her attitude and energy and heard a little pitchiness. Robin is swimming in a barrel of emotion he says from John singing the song and he loved that Meleana came out of her shell.Contestant/Coach: John Glosson/Jennifer Nettles Jennifer wants to show he can be fun and be upbeat and not just sing ballads. Song: "Life is a Highway," Rascal FlattsPerformance: He meets his goal and shows he can be cute and fun onstage and of course they sound great together. Judging: Kelly thought it was the perfect song and was glad that she felt him and not just Jennifer. Robin thinks that his voice is so good he doesn't have to try as hard as physically, like he and John don't dance and says not to worry so much about it. John thought he was great and told him not to pull his mic away on the big notes. nRankings:1st J Rome2nd Bridget Carrington3rd John Glosson4th Jordan Meredith5th Jason Farol6th Meleana Brown7th Olivia ChisholmnSing Off Meleana vs. OliviaMeleana sings Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love For You." It is solid if unspectacular. Olivia sings Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me." She sounds more tremulous but has more energy and spark. It feels like she wants it more.
